Dai Hung Field – A hallmark of Vietnam's Petroleum Science and Technology
Hanoi, March 26, 2026 – PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP) held a scientific workshop to introduce its research project titled "Application of Science and Technology Solutions for the Restoration, Expansion, and Efficient Development of the Dai Hung Field" as part of the nomination process for the 7th Ho Chi Minh Prize in Science and Technology.

Discovered in complex geological conditions in the Nam Con Son Basin at water depths exceeding 100 meters, the Dai Hung field was once deemed uneconomical. After international contractors including BHP, Total, Sumitomo, and Petronas invested more than USD 400 million but saw output drop to about 2,000 barrels per day, the field was transferred to Petrovietnam on February 12, 1999, for a symbolic price of USD 1.
Since 2003, PVEP has taken over and revitalized the field by applying advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, optimized well design, enhanced oil recovery methods, and improved offshore processing and transport systems. Most solutions were developed entirely by Vietnamese engineers.

Mr. Ngo Huu Hai, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Petroleum Association, on behalf of the authoring team, presents the science and technology solutions that revived the Dai Hung field
The results have been remarkable: cumulative revenue now exceeds USD 4 billion, contributions to the state budget surpass USD 600 million, and operational costs have been optimized by tens of millions of dollars. The field also plays a strategic role in affirming national sovereignty over offshore waters and supporting fishing communities.

During the workshop, the Vietnam Record Organization presented certificates recognizing two record-setting components of the Dai Hung project: the FPU-DH01 central processing platform and the CALM buoy system for FSO tanker mooring. Experts unanimously agreed the project merits nomination for the Ho Chi Minh Prize in Science and Technology.
