On 21/4, PetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP) held the first Science and Technology Conference (ST) in 2017 with the topic “Stocktaking a decade of innovations and patents”.
Present at the event were Mr. Nguyen Quynh Lam - Vice President of PetroVietnam cum Chairman of PVEP Board of Directors; Mr. Hoang Ngoc Dang - advisor to the CEO of PVN, former Chairman of PVEP Board of Directors; Mr. Ngo Huu Hai - CEO of PVEP.
In his opening address, Mr. Nguyen Tien Long, Chair of PVEP Science and Technology Council shared that PVEP's ST, innovations and patents (IP) activities in the 2007 - 2017 period have seen clear progress, increasing both in numbers and in actual savings. Over the past decade, PVEP has applied 64 innovations and technical solutions (TS), with over 500 authors, resulting in nearly 900 million USD in savings for the Corporation.

Innovations and TS at PVEP are very diverse, encompassing many different areas of operation such as: production, well drilling, construction design technologies, integrated software, production oversight, management, health and environmental safety for both domestic and offshore operations. 

To realize these achievements, generations of leaders of PVEP have always created the favorable conditions, paid attention and provided close guidance to ST and IP, viewing them as important solutions in PVEP's development strategy. Leaders of PVEP have been directly involved in the orientation and proposition of possible research projects, solutions to address burning issues in PVEP's business operations. 
In addition, PVEP's trained and experienced team of experts and engineers with access to modern technologies, passion for innovations and the common goods are important foundations for encouragement of innovation and ingenuity. 

Overview of the Conference

Over the past decade, many of PVEP's innovations have brought about large economic benefits, namely: the initiative to “connect Hai Su Den/Hai Su Trang with Te Giac Trang wells (2012)” by Hoang Long - Hoan Vu JOC, which brought about roughly 600 million USD in terms of savings; the initiative to “improve water treatment system on ĐH-01 platform to reduce cargo oil heating time on FSO” by PVEP POC, an initiative recognized by PVN in 2013 and winning 3rd place at the 2013 Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) Award; the initiative to “Develop a dual hollow fracking simulation model for Cá Ngừ Vàng well in the Cuu Long basin” by the Production development department which has been patented...

At the conference, participants heard presentations, comments and exchanged views and shared good practices and experience of exemplary business units with remarkable successes in research and development, and IP.

Mr. Ngo Huu Hai - CEO of PVEP said IP at PVEP has developed strongly over the past decade, particularly during the past 3 years with great increase in both quantity and quality of research. To continue to improve research and development of technological innovations in the future, Mr. Ngo Huu Hai suggested leaders of departments and business units of the Corporation provide favorable conditions for the young generation to conduct scientific research; highlight spirit of responsiblity, mentality of innovation, take the initiative in proposing R&D projects, prioritizing advanced technical solutions researches, smart technologies linked to technical improvements, reducing production and overhead costs; develop practical R&D projects that could be directly applied to PVEP's own business operations; reinvent R&D approval and assessment procedures to encourage, and facilitate the spirit of innovation, appreciating even the simplest ideas so that ST and IP truly becomes important drivers for PVEP's sustainable development.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Nguyen Quynh Lam - PVN Vice President cum Chairman of PVEP Board of Directors stressed, as part of PVN's development orientations, ST is always an important driver and solution. In the current context, changes in ways of thinking, courage to propose new ideas, breakthrough solutions to overcome difficulties, ensure sustainable and stable development is particularly needed. In this spirit, Mr. Nguyen Quynh Lam hopes that PVEP will continue to promote solutions to encourage ST to develop ever more substantively, resulting in greater efficiency and can have a ripple effect that will contribute to the development of both PVEP and PVN.
